Ghana Mission to UK Fleecing Ghanaian Returnees GHC 600 a Day In Quarantine

Ghana’s mission to the United Kingdom has announced that Ghanaians in the country planning to travel to Ghana will be forced to cough up GH¢500 and GH¢600 every day to cover their cost of the mandatory 14-day quarantine against Covid-19.

This means travellers will be forced into an extra expenditure of about GHC 8, 500 (£ 1,100) in addition to their flight tickets and other related expenses.

The amount is expected to cover the cost of feeding and the hotels where they would be held in quarantine. They will have to pre-pay the amounts to the hotels before their arrivals.

The selected hotels include Alisa, Airport View, Marriot, etc.

A statement from the Ghana High Commission to UK released on June 10, 2020, reads: “…per directives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of Ghana, the evacuation exercise of Ghanaians who are willing to cover the cost of travel and mandatory quarantine will take place on the 17th of June 2020. In preparation for the intended evacuation and to ensure a smooth exercise.”

It continues: “The cost of quarantine as indicated below PER NIGHT MUST be paid directly to a selected hotel before passengers are allowed to travel. Eligible nationals who are prepared to pay for their cost of travel to Ghana must submit their details specified below to the Ghana High Commission not later than close of day on Friday, 12th June 2020.” Critics have expressed disgust at the amount, saying it was exploitative
