Inmates of the Sekondi Central Prison reportedly rejected the food that they were served over the weekend and staged a hunger strike over the quality of the food.
Reportedly they chanted war songs in lament of the fact that their nutriment is not better than those of animals.
Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Sekondi Prisons, DSP Nester Adjettey confirmed the story. “The inmates protested and refused to eat the food given them in the morning of last Friday. Meanwhile, we have put lots of measures in place to help avoid such protests in the yard in the future”, he assured.
The government allocates a paltry Ghc1.80 (less than $0.35) to every prisoner a day.
DSP Nester Adjettey appealed to benevolent institutions and individuals to come to the aid of the incarcerated
