In a rather suspicious move, the Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that it will deploy a manual process to transmit election results from all the collation centres to the EC head office on December 7, 2020.
The archaic method of transmitting election results manually was scrapped particularly in 2016 when results were electronically transmitted through the EC’s intranet as results were confirmed at collation centres.
Dr Eric Bossman Asare, the Deputy Chair at the Commission in charge of Corporate Services says the election regulator has resorted to the manual process because it has “no problem”.
“Even if it requires going to the communities with a helicopter, by boat or whatever means that will take us to these remote places, and if it means we should be at the place three days before time, we will make provisions for that,” he said.
It is unclear, what has prompted the EC to make a U-turn. But Whatsup News is picking up signals that the EC is suspecting that its system has become vulnerable to hacking just like it was reportedly subjected to massive hacking during the 2016 presidential elections.
The Manual transmission is not fool-proof either, as hoodlums could be deployed to intercept such transmissions.
The inconsistency of the Jean Mensah-led EC has raised concerns among civil society groups and sworn critics. They warn that she may be manipulating the electoral process to favour the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the high-stake election in December 2020.
Already, the trust issues with the EC boss are raising concerns that the country may descend into armed conflict if the results of the elections reinforce the long-held suspicions.
