Select Your Own Moderators, I Will Debate You – Mahama Pokes Akufo-Addo Again

Former President John Mahama has repeated his call for a debate with President Akufo-Addo, after a first open invitation to the President was conveniently ignored by Mr. Akufo-Addo.

According to the former President, President Akufo-Addo is at liberty to even pick his own moderators and pick his own venue and still the former President will gladly oblige him a debate.

President Mahama, who is also the 2020 Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) made the call in an address to the Chiefs and people of Kwamekrom in the Biakoye constituency of the Oti Region where he is on a three-day tour.

According to the former President, he is ready to once and for all settle the debate over who has provided more infrastructural development for Ghana.

Mr. Mahama first made the call earlier this week after Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia had shocked the nation at a fair with the claim that the Akufo-Addo government has built more infrastructure than every other government preceding it in the Fourth Republic.

According to Dr. Bawumia, the NPP government in three and a half years, has initiated over 17,000 projects, claiming that some of the projects initiated by the government have been comparatively less expensive than what the Mahama government paid for similar projects.

Immediately after the results fair, former President Maham,a demanded a debate with President Akufo-Addo so the matter can be thrashed out once and for all. However, President Akufo-Addo has not responded.

In addition to infrastructure, the NDC Flagbearer also said he is ready to debate Nana Akufo-Addo on all issues.

He demanded to know what the Akufo-Addo government has done with the GHC140 billion it has so far added to the national debt stock through borrowing in just 3 and a half years pointing out that he built roads, hospitals, schools, airports, expanded access to water and electricity, among others with the GHC54 billion.

Former President Mahama told the chiefs and people that when the NDC returns to power under him, his government will provide each region with a public university including the Oti Region.

Meanwhile, think tank, IMANI Ghana, has praised the idea of a Presidential debate and said it should be held.
