Final Year SHS Students Face Mass Failure At WASSCE Due To Covid-19 Stress

The final year students that Government has forced to return to school to supposedly prepare for the West African Schools Certificate Examinations (WASCE) are dealing with serious distractions from the outbreak of the deadly COVID-19 coronavirus on campuses and possible mass failure in their final exams. WhatsUp News has learnt that the students who are virtually being held hostage are now more concerned about not catching Covid-19 as infections spread among schools like wildfire. Sources tell WhatsUp News that some students in Accra Girls for instance, have begun suffering nightmares in their boarding houses after more than 50 of their colleagues were infected with Covid-19. The situation is said to be similar in other schools where the school environments have become hostile with suspicion circumspection. According to a source from the Arch Bishop Porter Girls SHS in Takoradi, the situation is compounded by the fact that there are no psychologists on campus to ease the stress of students. The coronavirus has been spreading among final year Senior High School students after they were forced back to campuses barely a month ago. Yesterday, four schools in the Volta Region recorded positive cases of the virus after ten students in the Central and Western Regions were earlier reported to have caught the virus. Among the schools are Mawuli and Dabala SHSs. The Accra Girls SHS has had up to 50 people infected, with most of the students only remaining on campus because the government has held them hostage. Now reports from sources from some of these schools are that some of the students are suffering trauma, mainly in the form of nightmares and a heightened sense of fear. These students who are on campuses as boarders are also likely to face a lot of stigma when they return home, with those who catch the virus, likely to spread it.
