BorlaPlast hosts the CEO of Nima Excellence Awards

Abubakari Issaka the CEO of Borlaplast hosted one of youngest budding entrepreneur and Media personality, the CEO of Nima Excellence Awards, Ibrahim Alhassan, to Borlaplast center.  The center is an initiative which seeks to improve the poor sanitation condition in the Nima-Mamobi community through the creation of plastic bottle waste bins and advocacy.

The initiative was envisioned at an encounter with a Fisherman at Osu who told Abubakari that most of the waste problems comes from Nima-Mamobi after his net caught little fish and many plastics. This did not stop there until another time, a policeman also described Nima-Mamobi as a place where residence dump refuse in drainages.

These encounters inspired the CEO of Borla Plast to start an initiative that has now transformed significantly the way people treat refuse in the community. Borlaplast has so far placed bins at schools, community centers, civil society organizations such as West Africa Center for Counter Extremism, other NGOs among others. He has also trained over 60 students who are now sanitation ambassadors in their various schools.

Also, the initiative has been able to save about 3 ½ tonnes of plastic bottles from getting into our drainages. These saved bottles are used for recycling and sanitation education. The community has experienced some form of proper waste disposal since the inception of the initiative and he hopes to do more.

The invitation of the CEO of Nima Excellence Awards to the center is another smart move to spread the sanitation move across all zongos.  The guest will be taken through the activities of center, making of the bins, sorting out of plastic bottles, sachet bags ect.

The CEO took the opportunity to advice his fellow zongo people to see waste as cash, by sorting out their own generated waste and sell them rather than paying to dispose them.  He cited an example of multibillion businessman Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong who has turn waste into cash.
