The Affirmative Action Coalition (AAC), which is the pressure group crusading for the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill into law, is demanding a meeting with Minister of Gender over the pendency of the passage of the bill.
Today, which is set aside as World Women’s day, saw the coalition hold a press conference in Accra to demand more meaningful action towards the passage of the Bill which has stalled after a need arose last year for some corrections to be made to it.
According to the coalition, the delays that continue to hamstring the passage of the Bill is baffling and that as part of a commitment to apply more effort in the crusade to have it passed they want a meeting with the Gender Ministry so the Minister can explain exactly what the delay is all about.
The group also says it will hold a round table discussion with like minded persons to solicit ideas on the way forward.
The group has made it clear that they fear that there is a deliberate agenda to sweep the Bill under the carpet.
The Affirmative Action Bill went to Cabinet in 2019, but some incongruities were detected and sent back to Gender Ministry for rectification.
After the Gender Ministry received it, it also forwarded it to the Attorney General for some correction to be made. Since then however, the Bill has not gone back to Parliament for it to be laid and debated and then passed. It is not clear as to why.
