CORONAVIRUS Bawumia warns Against Handshake, Mask Surfaces in Parliament

Ghanaian authorities are growing increasingly uneasy about the ravaging Coronavirus Covid-19 as evident by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s latest suggestion for Ghanaians to avoid handshakes to reduce the possibility of contracting the disease.

Speaking at the Centenary Anniversary of the Presbyterian cluster of schools in Suhum Dr Bawumia said: “This infection is largely spread through contact and so many countries are putting in measures and we in Ghana can’t be oblivious…To our traditional leaders, we will have to think about how frequently we shake hands with each other across the country.”

“It is a risk we have to take, it is difficult to change this attitude but we have to put everything aside and do what is needed. Let’s wash our hands regularly, cover your mouth and nose when sneezing because you could spread in that manner,” the Veep stated in one of the most extreme suggestions so far made by a Ghanaian government official.

Meanwhile, in sync with the Vice President’s advice, Ras Mubarak, the Member of Parliament for the Kumbungu constituency, today March 3, 2020, showed up in the Chamber of Parliament in a face mask clearly to protect himself from the possibility of contracting the deadly coronavirus from his colleagues.

He was seen chatting with colleagues with the hideous mask strapped onto his face. His critics believe his action was a mere publicity stunt to draw attention to the seriousness of the disease.

The coronavirus which emanated from Wuhan in China has currently officially infected close to 100,000 globally and has killed about 3,000 of its victims. More than 17 countries worldwide have reported cases of the flu-like pandemic.

Over the weekend, a Ghanaian who had travelled from the epicentre of recorded coronavirus cases in Germany died after showing symptoms similar to flu. The reported death has sparked hysteria among Ghanaians who think the authorities may be trying to cover up the fact that Ghana may have recorded its first case.

However, the Ghana Health Services (GHS) has allayed fears saying that even though the deceased exhibited flu-like symptoms, a test proved negative for Covid-19.
