Council Of State Presents Resolution On Request To Remove CJ

The Council Of State has handed over its resolution in respect of a petition demanding the removal of Chief Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah from office over alleged bribery.

The Chairman of the Council, presented the resolution to President Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House in Accra on Friday, August 20, 2021.

It is not yet known what resolution the Council came to.

Last month, an anti-corruption group, the Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) petitioned President Akufo-Addo over allegations that the Chief Justice had demanded a US$5million bribe and received part of it from a litigant Ogyeedom Obranu Kwasi Atta Vl.

The allegation had been made by the Lawyer of the Chief, Akwasi Afrifa, who had revealed in a petition that his client had told him to make the bribe available so that his case with the Ghana Telecom company and the Lands Commission can be decided in his favor.

According to Lawyer Akwasi Afrifah, his client had told him that the Chief Justice had also asked him to replace him (Akwasi Atta) with Lawyer Akoto Ampaw, personal lawyer of President Akufo-Addo in the case.

And he claimed he knew all these because the chief had asked him to return part of legal fees that he had already been paid as part of the process to raise the alleged bribe money.

Chief Justice Anin Yeboah has since denied the allegation and dragged the lawyer General Legal Council which he presides over.

He has also caused the Police to open an investigation.

Last month, Nana Asante Bediatuo, Executive Secretary to President Akufo-Addo, had written to the Executive Director of ASEPA, Mensah Thompson, informing him that the President had commenced the appropriate processes.

Per the standard procedures, the President refers to the matter for the Council of State for advice and if the Council returns and advises that there is a case to be answered to, the President initiates impeachment procedures.
