Gender Minister Fires National School Feeding Coordinator

The National Coordinator of the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) Gertrude Quashigah has been fired.

A letter dated May 18, 2021, from the Ministry of Gender and Social Protection directed that Mrs. Quahsigah was to leave the office with immediate effect and will be paid one month’s salary in lieu of notice of the summary dismissal.

“You will be paid one month’s salary in lieu of notice as stipulated in your contract agreement. We appreciate your support towards the execution of the mandate of the Ghana School Feeding Programme during the period.” The letter is signed by sector Minister, Sarah Adwoa Safo.

No reason was given for the dismissal. Mrs. Gertrude Quashigah, was officially named national coordinator of the programme in March 2020 after taking over from Dr. Kwame Adu-Nsiah who was also fired.

Some media reports are however linking it to an investigation that the Police recently launched into the administration of school feeding in the Ashanti Region.

In respect of that probe, the Ghana Education Service (GES) directed the management of some Senior High Schools in the Region to co-operate with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service as it investigates the supply of food items.

A total of 53 schools had been listed by the GES for the investigation. Among them were the Afia Serwaa Kobi Ampem SHS, Adu Gyamfi SHS, Kumasi Anglican, Kumasi Girls, Kumasi Wesley Girls, KNUST SHS and Opoku Ware SHS.
