Four illegal miners have been confirmed dead at Tarkwa in the Western Region after a mine pit caved in while they were digging for gold.
The Police Service has named the deceased as Don Bortey, Black Arrow, Kwesi, and Apaa.
The incident is said to have occurred today in the Tarkwa Nsuaem constituency.
Two of the victims had been trapped in the pit for days, with all efforts to rescue them proving futile.
Two other colleagues of the trapped victims would later also perish while trying to salvage the bodies of the deceased.
One Mr. Ottoo, identified as the owner of the pit was said to be the one who later called the Police to retrieve the trapped bodies.
Two of the deceased have since been identified by their families according to Mr. Otoo.
Meanwhile, the bodies of the four miners have been deposited at the Tarkwa Government hospital morgue pending autopsy.
