Kumasi Police Hunt For Four Wounded Armed Robbers

Four members of an armed robbery gang in Kumasi who managed to flee after they were wounded in a gun battle with the Police are on the Police’ wanted list.

The Police has appealed to hospitals for help to apprehend the robbers who are believed to be a car snatching ring.

A total of six robbers who were cruising in a black BMW saloon car engaged the Police in an exchange of fire at Santasi in the Ashanti regional capital on Tuesday night. Two of them were shot dead by the Police while the remaining four who are believed to have sustained gunshots wounds abandoned the car and managed to flee.

One Police officer sustained gun wounds and was rushed to the hospital. He is reportedly responding to treatment.

Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP David Agyeman Adjem, told journalists in Kumasi that the Police has intelligence that the suspects are also the perpetrators of a recent attack on a gold dealer Manso-Dadease in the Amansie South District, which resulted in the killing of three people.

On Tuesday, the Police had picked up intelligence that the gang was preparing for another robbery operation and had detailed a team to trail the gang.

The dispatch encountered the group at Santasi where the six members in the BMW opened fire at the Police. The officers responded resulting in the killing of two of the suspects.

DCOP Adjem said the remaining members of the gang eventually abandoned the car after sustaining injuries and managed to escape. The officer who was shot in the encounter was then rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Later, a search in the vehicle revealed one SMG rifle loaded with seven rounds of ammunition and one SIG SAUER SP2022 pistol also loaded with eleven rounds of ammunition.

The bodies of the dead robbers have since been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital morgue awaiting autopsy and identification.

Meanwhile, the Police is appealing to all medical facilities to report people who report with gun wounds.
