Catholic Arch Diocese Of Accra Announces Resumption Of Public Worship

The Arch Diocese of Accra has announced that it is taking President Akufo-Addo on the offer to resume church activities on the Sunday, the 7th of June.

This announcement is coming when several major churches such as the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) and the Perez Chapel have declined to accept the president’s offer.

In a circular to priests and ordinary members alike, Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra and Apostolic Administrator of Sekondi, said the decision to take the President on the offer had been taken by the Church’s Priests’ Council.

According to the circular, the Council met on 1st June and also considered inputs from the Catholic Health Professionals Guild before reaching the decision.

President Akufo Addo on the 31st of May announced the easement of some restrictions imposed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, among which was the allowance of church activities to resume on the 7th of June.

However, the President was quick to add that the easements are to be done gradually, starting with the protocol that churches can only have up to 100 congregants at a time.

The President also directed that the Churches register the names of the congregants who will attend services.

According to the circular from the Archdiocese of Accra, all of the directives will be adhered to.

However, the circular notes that no church under the diocese is under compulsion to start services and that where a church decides to start, it has to ensure that the churches are first fumigated.

The churches are also to set up Covid-19 response teams to guide and advise and manage prevention and handle any possible outbreaks.

Additionally, churches which decide to open up are to make provisions for sanitary items such as wash water and soap to ensure that members in attendance have can always wash their hands and generally keep clean while observing social distancing.
