Atta Akyea Announces Upcoming Prosecutions Over Saglemi Housing Project

Housing Minister, Samuel Atta Akyea, has heralded upcoming prosecutions over what he says is financial malfeasance that has been thrown up by an audit into the Saglemi housing project.

In an interview on Accra based Joy FM this Wednesday, the Minister said a clear case of the misappropriation of funds has been established and that once an ongoing audit completes, the matter will be referred to the appropriate quarters for prosecution.

“When we finish, we will be able to use the audit for two purposes; to get a new contractor to complete the structures for human habitation and also refer the matter to the appropriate bodies for prosecution.

“From our perspective, there has been misappropriation of funds,” Atta Akyea said.

According to him, the audit was conducted by the Ghana Institute of Surveyors and that the GIS had been used to do the audit instead of a private auditing firm that would have charged $1.2million.

Once the audit is concluded, he said the way will be paved for his Ministry to also complete 1,500 out of the 5000 housing units under the project.

The Saglemi affordable housing project was started by the erstwhile Mills and Mahama Governments. However, since assuming office, the Akufo-Addo government has been superintending over a stalling of the project with allegations emerging that monies had been misappropriated.

Water Resources Works and Housing Minister, Samuel Atta Akyea has said that the audit has since firmed up evidence of the misappropriation of funds and that the perpetrators will be prosecuted.
