There is a growing state of panic in Ghana as the country’s Covid-19 cases have shot up to 1,500 with 271 new cases reported by the Ghana Health Services. A total of 11 people have died so far from complications reportedly triggered by the coronavirus.

The latest figure amounts to some 500 new cases since President Akufo Addo lifted the containing lockdown on April 20, 2020. This is the highest week of increase since the first case of Covid-19 was detected on March 13, 2020.

Critics have raised questions about the rationality for lifting the lockdown amidst escalating cases.

It however appears the Ghanaians government may be banking on the population acquiring Herd Immunity to the disease as is being reported in countries like Sweden which totally shirked the popular lockdown measures.

Meanwhile, 21 more persons who were initially infected by the disease have reportedly recovered, raising the tally of recoveries from 134 recoveries to 155.

In total, 12 of the 16 Regions in Ghana have reported cases, with the Oti Region being the latest with 13 new cases.

The trend of infection appears to be following population density in the country, with the most densely populated urban area getting the largest of the cut.

Globally, almost three million people have been infected with about 205,000 recorded deaths. The USA is the country with the highest infection rate of almost one million cases and over 54,000 deaths.
