Techiman Central Market Closed Social Distancing Breach

Authorities in Techiman, in the Bono East Region have today closed down the popular Techiman Central Market after traders wantonly flouted social distancing directives amidst the Covid-19 coronavirus.

The closure comes after authorities had earlier announced the decision on account of traders’ non-compliance with the health directive.

Following the closure, dealers in perishable goods were this morning forced to resort to a different location in the town to sell their stuff including fresh vegetables.

Authorities in the area had quickly responded by storming the alternative location to re-enforce the same social distancing directives that had been ignored by the traders at the central market which is the largest food market in the region. Here too, there was minimal success in getting traders to comply.

Non-compliance has become a scary reality following President Akufo-Addo’s controversial lifting of the partial lockdown imposed on the country for three weeks.

Meanwhile, Local Government Minister, O.B. Amoah is advocating the passage of a Legislative Instrument to enforce social distancing directives issued by Government.

This, he says, will help curb the wanton disregard for social distancing as Ghana records more Coronavirus infections on a daily basis.
