The National Communications Authority has dismissed claims that the deadly coronavirus which is ravaging the world may have evolved as a side effect of 5G mobile technology.
In a detailed release on the subject, the Authority said several years of studies championed by the World Health Organization have failed to prove that radio frequency radiations negatively impact human health.
“There have been over 50 years of scientific research about the potential health risk associated with radiations from radio frequency signals and telecommunication installations. The World Health Organisation (WHO) reports that no evidence has been found to conclude that exposure to RF radiations are harmful to human health despite extensive research to date,” the NCA said.
The NCA’s response is coming amidst a divided front in both the scientific community and the general public in what is believed to be a grand cover-up.
“RF radiations from FM radio and TV broadcasting signals have not caused any health hazards despite the many years of human exposure to them. Comparing the characteristics of the RF radiations from 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G base stations and handsets to that of FM radio and TV, the NCA does not expect any harm to human health,” the NCA release said.
It added that locally, there are institutions that are policing such radiations and that it has not emerged that such radiations have negative impact on health.
“In Ghana, the Radiation Protection Institute (RPI) of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) works with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), NCA, and the telecommunications industry to ensure that electromagnetic emissions from telecommunications infrastructure are within safe limits.”
The rumours about 5G technology being the cause of the deadly Coronavirus have been on social media for some time now. Those making such claims say throughout history, there has been a correlation between advancement in radio waves and pandemics, saying that among other things, even the flu virus had evolved when radio airwaves were developed and used extensively in Europe.
According to the rumour mongers, the fact that coronavirus originated from Wuhan China is telling because Wuhan is a place where 5G technology has been massively deployed already.
However, the NCA has said that there is no science supporting any such claims. On the contrary, its release on the topic said, available science rather support the view that radio and mobile telephone radiations are very safe.
“The NCA, as part of its consumer protection mandate, has established a Type Approval laboratory with test and measurement equipment for Radio Frequencies (RF), Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) and Specific Absorption Rate (SAR),” says the NCA.
“The laboratory undertakes measurements to ascertain the safety of mobile devices (phones, tablets, etc) and field measurements of radiations from mobile base stations at frequencies below 6GHz which is the range of frequencies for 2G, 3G and 4G in Ghana. Future 5G deployments in Ghana will also utilize some frequencies below 6GHz as well as higher frequencies and within safe limits,”
Despite the assurance from the NCA, there are scholarly papers that also proves that these RF and EMFs are hazardous to humans over the long term. In September 2019, two Professors of Oncology and Public Health from Sweden and Finland: Professor Lennart Hardell and Rainer Nyberg respectively issued a damming paper that claimed there was a grand cover-up in the health effects of these radio waves.
