Coronavirus Forces UCC TO Cancel Foreign Trips

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) is the latest Ghanaian institution to cancel all foreign travels of its staff following the threat of the global rampage of the coronavirus (Covid-19), Whatsup News has gathered.

Information has it that the UCC has already communicated the travel ban to all Heads of Departments, Directors, Deans and Provosts.

In the directive, UCC will neither send its staff outside Ghana nor receive foreign delegates for international conferences; Suspension of incoming exchange visits and visiting professors and staff already out of the country will be asked to go through self-quarantine before they will be reintegrated back into the school.

On Tuesday, March 10, 2020, the Presidency issued a stern warning to all government appointees to forget any foreign travel until further notice.

The statement issued directly from the Jubilee House said the travel ban was to curb the appointees from attracting the deadly disease to Ghana from their travels.

“As part of measures to prevent the outbreak of the coronavirus (Covid-19) in Ghana, His Excellency the President of the Republic has directed that all foreign travels by public officials/officers should be temporarily suspended. Only critical travels will be considered,” read a statement signed by the Chief of Staff Akosua Frema Osei-Opare.

“This directive together with the other measures being put in place by Government is intended to protect the general public from contracting the virus. Please note and ensure compliance,” the statement concluded.

Meanwhile,  public and private institutions in Ghana are set to follow suit in slapping travel restrictions on its workers and staff due to the danger posed by the human-to-human Covid-19 which has so far infected almost 120,000 people worldwide and killed 4,000.

China is the hardest hit as it reportedly originated from its research facility in the Wuhan Province in December 2019. So far several countries in Europe, America, Asia, South America and a few incidents in Africa have been recorded.
