Chiefs and people of the Ashanti Region are set for a massive demonstration tomorrow against the Akufo-Addo government, over what they call neglect and a litany of failed promises.
Dubbed the “Asanteman Kye Fa;” to wit, “Asanteman’s Due” demonstration, it promises to witness royal majesties of the Asante Kingdom, leaving the comfort of their palaces for the streets.
WhatsUp News can report that the demonstration is being organized under the leadership of the Kumasi Youth Association (KUYA).
According to reports, KUYA has since received the endorsement and promise of participation by sub and paramount chiefs of the various traditional areas of Asanteman.
Placards that will be carried will among other things demand that the Kumasi film village be built. The demonstrators will also demand that Kumasi, the Ashanti regional capital, be modernized
Some of the placards that have already been lined up read; “Protect Ashanti businesses,” “Complete Boankra inland port;” “Kumasi deserves theatre/ conference centre;” “Improve Kumasi streetscape;” and “Complete komfo anokye overpass.”
Others are, “Establish the bauxite refinery,” “Status of greater Kumasi project?” “Anloga junction flyover?” “Suame round 3Tier flyover? And “Kejetia flyover campaign promise?”
A more scary one for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Government, which has Ashanti as its main stronghold reads, “ We will vote anyone who will take us serious.”
The demonstration is however going to happen at a time that President Akufo-Addo is out of the country attending the United Nations Assembly meeting in the US.
Since the NPP came into office, the party has been accused of not fulfilling many of its campaign promises, even though the government has insisted that it has done so.
Along with this conflict of claims, there have been a growing sense that the government, headed by President Akufo-Addo, has largely placed the President’s tribes people in juyicy positions tonthye neglect ofg Ashantis.
There have also been reports in the past that the government has plans to concentrate on building Akyem Abuakwa, the President’s home area to the neglect of other areas of the country. As part of this plan, it has been alleged that the government is funding a project for the Okyehene’s palace to be expanded several times its size, just so that it can dwarf the Asantehene’s Manhyia palace.
