Urgent Appeal to VRA: Volta NDC Demands Halt to Akosombo Dam Spillage

The Volta Regional Secretariat of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a pressing call to the Volta River Authority (VRA) demanding an immediate halt to the continuous spillage of the Akosombo Dam which has destroyed lives and properties worth millions of cedis.

The party insists that pragmatic safety measures be implemented before the situation escalates and causes further devastation to the lives of the local communities.

This passionate plea follows the recent spillage of the Akosombo Dam, resulting in severe flooding that has affected more than one hundred communities across five constituencies within the Volta Region.

The NDC is deeply concerned about the implications of this unexpected spillage on the affected communities. Lives, properties, health, and livelihoods are at significant risk if swift action is not taken.

The party asserts that the government must take every necessary measure to mitigate the situation. The NDC criticizes the lack of engagement with stakeholders and communities residing along the riverbank before this year’s spillage.

The absence of official communication has left the community astonished and ill-prepared to face the floods that have engulfed their homes. Furthermore, the Volta NDC expresses dismay over the central government’s response, citing a lack of interest and immediate assistance for the affected residents and communities.

The party urgently appeals to the central government to assist these hard-hit communities, as the damages caused go beyond what individual support can address. The statement highlights that the spillage has resulted in power outages in the affected areas, disrupting essential services such as the Adidome Hospital.

Individuals in need of medical care face grave dangers due to the lack of electricity. Moreover, access to these communities has been severely affected, as roads are impassable, leaving commuters stranded. Some residents have resorted to using boats and canoes, further endangering their lives.

The communities identified by the Volta NDC as being affected include Central Tongu, South Tongu, North Tongu, Keta, and Anlo Districts. The Volta NDC stands in solidarity with the affected individuals in these communities and calls for immediate intervention to prevent further destruction of lives and properties.
