“Don’t Blame Me”- Bagbin Says In Attempts To Wriggle Out Of E-Levy Saga

Speaker of the Ghanaian Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has refused to accept blame from some Ghanaians who have accused him of superintending and therefore being conspiratorial in the passage of the controversial e-levy.

While swearing-in some executives for Parliamentary business, April 4, 2022, he pointed out that in parliament his role is only that of an umpire and nothing more and therefore the passage of laws are not for him to determine.

“Ghanaians should know that I don’t take part in decision making in the House. Article 93 of the constitution only allows me to preside over the House but not to take part in decision-making because I am not a Member of Parliament. So, Ghanaians cannot blame me for the one-sided decision in the passage of the E-levy,” he said.

The controversial e-levy was passed by a one-sided Parliament made up of the Majority side on 29th March 2022, after the Minority side had walked out in protest.

Over the proceedings, Bagbin had presided as Speaker, something that has made some Ghanaians accuse him of conspiring with the Majority side to inflict hardships on Ghanaians.

Meanwhile, the Minority in Parliament has since petitioned the Supreme Court over the purported approval of the tax which Akufo-Addo says he has assented to.
