NPP’s Funeral Campaigns Gets Out of Hand

National executives of the governing New Patriotic (NPP) are worried about the growing trend where party zealots invade funeral grounds by turning them into campaign platforms for the presidential bid of Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia and other aspirants.

The situation has gotten so bad that the National Organizer of the NPP Sammy Awuku, had warned party zealots and Constituency Chairmen to stop what he describes as subtle campaign activities at funerals for Presidential candidate aspirants of the party.

“There is a growing trend that as Constituency Chairmen we have to be very tough on. Whoever is a beneficiary or victim, we just have to put our foot on the ground. There is a growing sense and strategy of turning funerals into campaigning grounds for would-be Presidential candidates,” said Sammy Awuku.

“As much as possible, the Constituencies are expected to preserve the unity of the party. When it turns that because you are active constituency executives, you pray the ostrich, stand aside but send our youth Organizers to mobilize people to cheer Mr. A or Mr. B.Chairmen, they make your work difficult,” he said.

He was addressing his party people on Saturday, July 17, 2021, in Koforidua during the inauguration of the NPP Constituency officers’ welfare.

Sammy Awuku warned his party that” If we are not careful with the internal primaries and party discipline, we may end up breaking ourselves before breaking the 8. President Kuffuor’s statement still resonates in our ears, it is better to be a messenger in a party in government than to be a General Secretary for a party in opposition”.

The part’s worry stems from the recent trend where several funerals have been flooded with NPP poster-wielding campaigners for either Vice President Bawumia or Trade Minister Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanteng, who are reported to be the frontrunners for the presidential ticket of the NPP in 2024.

Recently, a group calling itself Friends of Bawumia for 2024 stormed the funeral ground for the father of Gabby Okyere-Darko in Koforidua to cheer a clearly supportive Vice President Bawumia who beamed from ear to ear from the appellations showered on his during the funeral that his supporters had robbed of its mournful atmosphere.

The aggressive campaign for the successors to President Akufo Addo is threatening to rip the governing party apart, Whatsup News has gathered.
