Officials who were contracted by the Electoral Commission (EC) to supervise the 2020 general elections are reportedly up-in-arms with the EC over unpaid allowances for their duties during the elections.
These consist of thousands of individuals recruited to represent the electoral commission across some 30,000 polling stations nationwide.
The aggrieved officials have been agitating over the delay in paying their allowances for nearly four months now after the exercise.
According to the officers, after conducting the exercise for over three months now, the Electoral Commission is yet to inform them when exactly they will be paid.
Some of the officials who spoke to an online news portal, Honestynewsgh lamented on the delay and urged the EC to immediately begin payment of their allowance to enable them to cater for their families as we are in hard times.
” Our commitment to this national assignment was strong and we discharged this duty to the best of our ability. For nearly four months now, none of us knows when we are going to be paid as the EC is yet to communicate to us. A good worker deserves to be paid and payment must be timely. We need our monies now, the EC is dragging it’s feet” the official said.
The EC has been fraught with controversies since the December 7, 2020, general elections, including the dubious presidential election declaration by the EC Chairperson, Jean Adukwe Mensah.
The faux pas had ended in court with an election petition filed by the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama.
