Teachers’ Unemployment looms

Some 30.7% of the 27,455 teachers who sat for the licensure exams in October 2020 have failed, Whatsup News has gathered.

This implies 8,442 teachers will potentially lose their years of teaching jobs in a contentious licensure examination introduced by the Akufo Addo administration.

The gloomy results was announced by the National Teaching Council (NTC) which also said 19,013 teachers, representing 69.3% passed the exams.

“The National Teaching Council (NTC) is set to release the results of October 2020 Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) on Tuesday, January 5, 2021,” the NTC said in a statement.

According to the NTC, candidates will be able to access their results on their website using special Personal Identification Numbers (PIN).

“All candidates can check their results from the NTC online portal at exam.nte.gov.gh by using either their pins given during registration or their examination index numbers using their phone numbers. Candidates are advised to print their provisional certificates after checking results,” the statement read.

The teacher licensure examination was introduced in 2018 by the Akufo-Addo government which has said that it is a quality sifting mechanism to ensure that only qualified teachers make it into classrooms across the country. However, it has been criticized as an unwanted hurdle for freshly graduated teachers who will be leaving colleges of education after rigorous exams anyway.
