The Military high command has reported that one out of a thousand personnel that have been deployed to enforce the partial lockdown over the Covid-19 pandemic has been recalled and put under probe.
Without mentioning the name and rank of the officer in question, General Officer Commanding Headquarters Southern Command, Brig. Gen. A. Y Nsiah told journalists Wednesday that the officer in question is being probed by Military Police.
However, amateur videos that have gone viral show security personnel from both the police and army seriously brutalising unarmed civilians whom they claim had breached the directives of the lockdown.
It is not clear what the infraction committed by the officer is but Brig. Gen. Nsiah said it has nothing to do with alleged manhandling of civilians as has been reported by sections of the media.
“We have deployed close to a thousand soldiers in the field, out of this number we have had only one incident. And that incident has nothing to do with slapping. That soldier involved, presently, has been withdrawn back to the barracks and I have tasked the Military Police to go into the matter and investigate.”
The General Officer had made the revelation in response to reports of widespread beatings of civilians by Police and Military personnel over the non-compliance with the order to stay at home during the lockdown period.
When confronted with the content of video footages capturing soldiers brutalizing civilians with whips and belts, Brig. Gen. A.Y. Mensah denies that such abuses are going on, saying those making the allegations are deliberately spreading disinformation.
“It is never true that our soldiers have been brutalizing our Ghanaians. We will not do it. We those in command will not permit it.
“I want to emphasize that most of us Ghanaians are religious; we are either Christians, or Muslims or traditional religious worshipers, and we know that telling lie about somebody is something that God does not permit. So those who are doing it I don’t know what your agenda is, please, God does not permit what you are doing. Stop it.”
