Police Clamp Down On Trotro Drivers Abusing Lockdown

The Police in Accra have reviewed their special operation, just a day into the two week lockdown instituted by Government, to clamp down on commercial vehicle drivers.

Many ‘trotros’ are being forced to disembark passengers and are being grounded because they continue to abuse conditions under which they can run during the lockdown, including the appropriate social distancing.

In disregard of the requirement that only two passengers are boarded per row, for instance, the trotro drivers have remained adamant by continuing to pack up to four passengers per row.

Director Of Operations, Accra Regional Police Supt Kwesi Fori has revealed that the Police decided to review their operations yesterday, after it was realized that trotro drivers are abusing the requirements.

“We reviewed our activities yesterday, and we have noticed that the trotro drivers are taking undue advantage of the offer given them. In view of this, today, there is much activity clamping down on their activities and redirecting them to go back

“They are also carrying a lot of people who have no business under special conditions like being employees of some vital organization like the Ministry of Health, Electricity, Water, Security among others. But rather. We’ve seen that a lot of people are trooping into the city just coming around to loiter and we are also doing away with these kinds of people making sure that they go back home and be safe,” he said.

According to him, the review has brought out all the 14 units that constitute the Greater Accra Police and even additional units to ensure that the president’s directives are enforced.

“So it is a crack security operation going on, all the 14 divisions in Accra, all the regional operations groups and the national, we are together pro-acting under these directives to make sure that we contain the activities of the trotro drivers.

“So far we have also advised some market women who are at locations that pose danger to their health and security to go back home,” he said.
