Market Women Boycott 2020 Elections

A cross-section of market women in the capital-Accra have vowed to boycott the 2020 general election because both the current and the previous governments have deceived them for their votes.

The disillusioned traders told Multimedia Group’s reporters during their Election Headquarters programme launch today March 12, 2020, that one of their major convictions that the current government of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is no different from the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) is their total disinterest in sanitation.

They cite the monumental heap of waste at the Makola Market, which has been a perennial eye-sore for traders and residents of Accra.

According to the women, contrary to promises made by the NPP administration to sanitise revenue collection by the exploitative Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) agents, the situation has remained virtually unchanged.

According to them, it is the duty of the Assembly to ensure that the markets are clean but they are being exploited for revenues that is not used to provide basic services as proper waste disposal at market areas.

The women say the current government has only burdened them with huge taxes.

“Right now we are fed up and won’t allow ourselves to be deceived again, we don’t see why we should go and queue and vote for these leaders when they have failed to fulfil their promises most especially to the market women,” one of them told crew of the Election Headquarters.

Market women and traders are an important demographic section of the voting public and analyst think their voices are an important way to assess the pulse of the voting public.

Already, other traders such as automobile spare-part and importers have complained at the unfavourable economic conditions the current government had subjected them to.

According to these traders, they voted out the NDC administration expecting a reprieve from the NPP, but the latter has turned out to either be the same or worse than the former.
