Sogakope Grinds To A Standstill Following Murder Of Popular Assemblyman

Angry residents of Sogakope in the Volta Region this Sunday Morning blocked roads and major access points after a popular Assemblyman in the town was reportedly murdered in cold blood, Sunday dawn.

The residents are protesting the lack of interest in the case by the Police Service following reports that SOS calls made to police by neighbours of the decease during the attack were ignored.

Early on Sunday morning, the assembly member, Marcus Mawutor Adzahli, who doubles as a mobile money vendor, was shot and killed at his residence.

Whatsup News gathered from eye-witnesses that about eight (8) masked and armed men laid siege and broke into the deceased residence, around 1:00 am, using cement blocks to breakthrough his bulletproof and burglary proof doors.

The assailants reportedly gained access to the house and shot him several times and killing him instantly.

His neighbours were reportedly woken up by the loud gunshots. The deceased’s wife was also injured and is currently in emergency care at the Sogakope District Hospital

The cause of the assault is not immediately clear as two conflicting accounts pop up. In one account, residents say he may have been a subject of revenge from a gang of armed robbers who once robbed him and lost one of their members in the process.

Another account claim, he was involved with a group of scammers who sent him a undisclosed amount of money which he squandered, resulting in the imprisonment and eventual death of one of the gang members.

These reports are however not substantiated, as residents mourn him due to his charisma in the town.

Mawutor is a 36-year-old entrepreneur operating one of the major Mobile Money and Vodafone Cash outlets in the Volta Region

He was elected last year as the Assembly Member for the Sogakope South Electoral area

According to townsfolk, he was philanthropic and regularly donated to the Sogakope District and hospitals. He is also known to pay the bills of patients detained for non-payment at the Sogakope Hospital.
