Parliament To Empower Auditor General To Publish Asset Declarations

Parliament will this year, give legal backing to the Auditor General to make public the declared assets of public officials.

Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu who made the revelation today in an interaction with journalists said that amendment of the asset declaration law is one of the things that the current Parliament has on agenda to complete before rising in December.

“We declare assets, Members of Parliament declare their assets, at the beginning of their tenure, when they are ending they are required to declare their assets. But these asset declarations are lodged with the Auditor General and nobody has access to it. Any public officer, because he is not required to make it in public, could make a declaration to reflect his own aspirations…” he said.

Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, who is also the MP for Suame, said the amendment to the asset declaration law will enhance transparency in respect of government officials.

“We want to amend the law in such a manner that it is required of you the Auditor General to make it public, so that it can be accessed by anybody who wishes to access it,” he said

In addition to this, he said, Parliament will also work on a new cyber security Bill that will tighten security within the cyberspace.

Additionally, Parliament will also amend the National Ambulance Service Law and the Customs Law to make it easier for dealers in automobiles to do business in the country.
