Journalist, Wife Escape Assassination Attempt Over Anti Galamsey Reportage

A journalist with Nkawkaw based Obuorba FM, Nana Darkwa (aka the Soldier) last week escaped an assassination attempt on their lives when gun-wielding masked men stormed their home and met their absence.

By providence Mr. Darkwa and his wife, D/Cpl Gifty Brenya, had been away to work, and that is how they managed to escape possible assassination at the hands of the masked gun men.

Three suspects have since been arrested, but charges slapped on them are being seen as lacking the gravity the first and second degree felony that the assassinationation attempt is.

According to Mrs. Gifty Asare Brenya, a Detective Corporal at the Nkawkaw Police Divisional Headquarters *(DOVVSU)* division and wife of the radio presenter, the incident happened on Friday 17th January, 2020.

She had left the couple’s six children at home to prepare for an upcoming examination and gone to work. On her, she had met one of the suspects in Police grips, 13 year old Elizabeth Akosua Fosuah, and questioned her based on her suspicious behaviour.

In the evening of the same day, while at the office, she received a call from a pharmacist named Antwi that one of her six children had run to his drug store to report the invasion of her home by gun wielding masked men.

She would later here from her daughter that the masked men had demanded the whereabouts of their father, Nana Darkwa and their mother. Elizabeth Akosua Fosuah, the 13 year old, also emerged as the person who led the gunmen to the house after she was paid some money.

While at the journalists home, the gun men allegedly pointed a gun at the head of some of the children and threatened to shoot if they did not show the whereabouts of their parents. It took a hapless six year old to scare the gunmen by claiming that she had called the Police and that the Police were on their way.

Later, Cpl Gifty Asare Brenya would arrest Elizabeth Fosuah as part of the investigations and find out that the attack was not unrelated to a crusade that her husband, Nana Darkwah had been running on radio about ongoing illegal mining within the Kwahu Ridge.

Nana Darkwa’s campaign is said to have led to an emergency tour of the place by the Eastern Regional Minister, Hon. Eric Kwakye Darfour and the Regional Security council.

The case has since been processed for court but on the first day of appearance at the Abetifi Distric Court, Prosecutors read ‘abetment of crime, unlawful entry and house detention’ as charges against the suspect. This has angered the family, especially Cpl Brenyah who wants the Inspector General of Police to intervene so that more serious charges can be brought against the suspects.

“I am by this pleading with the IGP to step into this matter and ensure proper justice to this matter for the safety of my family.”
