Will Another Marathon Record Fall At The Amsterdam Marathon?

A week ago Kenyan runner Eliud Kipchoge completed a marathon in under two hours his time was one hour, 59 minutes, and 40 seconds. Days later Brigid Kosgei ran 2 hours14 seconds in Chicago Marathon and she believes a woman can run sub 2:10. Against this backdrop long distance runners from across the world gear up for the prestigious 2019 edition of the Amsterdam Marathon. This Sunday 20 October, the Amsterdam Marathon will be broadcast LIVE on SuperSport 8, 9 & SuperSport Select 1 from 7:30am.

The Amsterdam Marathon is an IAAF Gold Label race and is regarded as one of the fastest courses in marathon running today. Highlights for SuperSport viewers to look out for include a start and finish in the Olympic Stadium, the passage under the Rijksmuseum, along the Amstel and through the Vondelpark. 

This year, the Amsterdam Marathon sees athletics powerhouse Lawrence Cherono of Kenya looking to win the men’s event for a third consecutive year, but he faces a strong challenge from a trio of Ethiopians.

Ayele Abshero is a three-time champion of the NN Egmond Half Marathon in the Netherlands and looking to improve on his marathon record of 2:04:23. Solomon Deksisa crushed his personal best in Amsterdam last year, shaving almost two minutes off his time to 2.04.40, while Tadu Abate is the youngest athlete from Ethiopia at the age of 22 and comes into the event as the Hamburg Marathon champion.
On the women’s side, Ethiopia’s Tadelech Bekele is also one to watch for SuperSport viewers, as she pursues a hat-trick of Amsterdam Marathon titles and takes aim at the course record of 2:21:09.

Her main rival will be Kenyan Linet Masai, a former 10,000m world champion who took up the marathon distance last year in the wake of having her first baby. Masai’s debut run at the Amsterdam Marathon in 2018 brought her a fifth-place finish at 2.23.46 and she will be aiming for an even faster time and better placing this time around.
