AMA DEMOLISHED 1000 WOODEN STRUCTURES @ OLD FADAMA, AMIDST COVID-19

About 4,000 slum-dwellers at the Old Fadama in Accra, have been rendered homeless, after the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) demolished wooden structures to pave way for the dredging of the Korle Lagoon.

Speaking to Gh One TV News Samari Swalley, one of the affected residents were of the view that the Assembly should have exercised patience until the lockdown was over.

They further indicated that they were not given any prior notice ahead of the demolishing.

“What has happened here is not good at all, because we have been informed about coronavirus and government has asked us to stay home and they have demolished our shelter so now where will we sleep?”

They indicated that the unfortunate incident will make life hard for them in the capital, therefore, appealed to the government to make arrangements for them to return to their various hometowns.

“At our hometowns, at least we will get a place to sleep and our parents and other relatives can help us survive until the lockdown is over here.”

Stressing for government to evacuate them from the country’s capital, they said living in Accra is expensive and due to the lockdown and suspension of many activities, they are suffering.

“We want to go back to our hometowns because, now we are not working and for this place, you pay for everything.

“When you want to bath, eat and even use the washroom but now that we are not working, where will we get money to take care of ourselves and children?”

Not long ago, some parts of Old Fadama was engulfed in flames leaving over 800 people in the slum homeless.
