President Akufo-Addo has given Presidential pardon to eight hundred and eight (808) prisoners.
The pardon which was issued Thursday, was on the advice of the Prisons Council, a statement from the Prisons Service has said.
Beneficiaries of the clemency comprise first-time offenders, seriously ill and very old inmates.
The Prison Service statement, signed by Director-General, Patrick Darko Missah said the President had exercised his powers under Article 72 (1).
Per the breakdown, a total of 783 first offenders, 11 seriously ill inmates, 7 inmates on death row commuted to life sentence, 4 inmates serving life sentences commuted to 20 years definite term and 3 very old inmates who are 70 years and above were given the amnesty.
“The first offenders totalling 783 who have served half their sentences, eleven (11) seriously ill prisoners and three/3 aged (very old) prisoners are to be released outright. However, seven/7 prisoners on death row will have their sentences commuted to life imprisonment; while 4 prisoners serving life sentences will be commuted to twenty/20 years definite term,” the statement said.
