McDan-Styled Demolition Lands Gov’t in US$ 5 million suit. - WhatsUp News

McDan-Styled Demolition Lands Gov’t in US$ 5 million suit.

The Ghanaian government faces a US$ 5 million suit following the wrongful demolition of a landed property in Miotso, near Prampram in the Greater Accra Region.

A Tema High Court in 2017 gave an order for demolition in Kopodar near Prampram in the Greater Accra Region but after being shown the location of the building marked for demolition, court bailiffs apparently led the demolition team of armed security agencies to a wrong building about a mile away.

The demolition was carried out on August 23, 2019, by a team of 40 armed SWAT officers of the Ghana Police Service.

The one-storey building that was eventually demolished is owned by one Nii Kpakpo Samoa Addo who uses it as warehouse and showroom for ceramic products.

An angry Nii Kpakpo Addo has promptly notified the Attorney General his suit to claim damages for the demolished building.

The notice dated February 21, 2020, is seeking up to US$ 5 million in damages for the cost of the one-storey building warehouse, a showroom, materials and goods stored and machinery.

“We have the instruction of our client to write to you in respect of the demolition of a one-storey building warehouse and a showroom belonging to our client by the Special Weapons and Tactics Unit (SWAT) of the Ghana Police Service,” states the notice.

“Our clients further instruct us to inform you that the estimated cost of the damage caused to the one-storey building warehouse, a showroom, materials and goods stored and machinery is valued at over five million dollars,” the notice signed by Nii Addo, who represents Addo & Addo, a private legal firm, read.

The notice said the demolition had also prevented the potential plaintiffs from doing their lawful registered business.
