Madina MP Hits Back At Hypocritical GBA

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Madina, Francis Xavier Sosu, has slammed the hypocrisy and compromised stance of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA)’s.

This follows an impasse between the GBA and the MP who insists on the politically tainted judiciary.

In a statement to the Association of Lawyers which has built a reputation among critics as another branch of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Hon. Xavier Sosu wondered about the uncharacteristic silence of the GBA on issues that threaten the cohesion of the country.

“It is a wonder to know that the Ghana Bar Association still exists in this country following your loud silence on critical matters of national concern which relate to the Bar, Legal Education, Mistreatment of Lawyers, lack of welfare for Lawyers, Human Rights abuses, Press freedom and justice delivery among others in Ghana,” he wrote.

Earlier in the week, the GBA had released a statement publicly insulting the Madina MP as “ignorant” and “unprofessional” for warning all judges who have made themselves manifestly political in their loyalty.

Lawyer Sosu who was speaking in an interview after the “Yentua” demonstration against the thievish e-levy, said that ‘political judges will be dealt with politically’ if the current administration loses power in the next election.

To this, the GBA which saw and heard no evil while the people of Santrokofi, Akpafu, Lolobi and Likpe were blatantly disenfranchised by the Akufo-Addo government in the 2020 elections, responded saying the utterances of the MP are unprofessional and ignorant.

“I take strong exceptions to the Statement of the leadership of the GBA,” the MP hit back.

Hon. Xavier Sosu pointed out that he has not contravened any of the rules of the Association, pointing out that the Association which has lost so much credibility in the public estimation is rather the one that has become a monumental failure.

“I reject the allegation of being unprofessional and irresponsible and would reiterate that the GBA is rather a monumental failure to our democracy and I take strong exceptions to the Statement of the leade A cursory look at the Objects of the GBA Constitution in Part 1, Section 2 clearly shows that the GBA has lost its focus and relevance long ago,” the MP disclosed in his statement.

He continued “Let me remind the GBA Leadership that it has a duty to ensure “the maintenance of the Independence of the Judiciary.” How can you achieve this object if judges allow themselves to be influenced politically? For the rest of the objects, I beg to leave it here else we wash our dirty linen in public.

The Ghanaians judiciary which features regularly in the annual Afrobarometer as one of the most corrupt institutions is increasingly becoming unpopular due to the behavior of some judges and its institutions. However, in all the controversial behaviours of the judiciary, the GBA had curiously remained mute.
