Army On Alert For Potential Coup d’etat …Deputy Defense Minister

Deputy Minister of DefenseKofi Amankwa-Manu, has assured that the country’s military is ready and able to confront and defend the government against any potential coup d’état as the military in the sub-region begins ousting tyrannical civilian governments in the region.

In viral stories quoting the deputy Minister, he also urges Ghanaians to believe in the military to deliver them from the hands of any coupists who would attempt to destabilize the country.

“I would want to take this opportunity to assure every Ghanaian living in this country to go about their normal duties without any fear because I have so much confidence in our men in uniform. They are prepared to protect this country from those I would call destroyers, the doomsayers,” he is quoted as saying.

He is also quoted as lamenting the current coup mongering against the Akufo-Addo government which the Minority has described as despotic.

“Because for them, probably I don’t know what really, they will seek to benefit from a coup,” he told the media.

The Deputy Minister’s lament is part of a general uneasiness of the Akufo-Addo government which has arrested a social activist, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, for simply mentioning the word “Coup” in his Facebook posts.

Mr. Barker-Vormawor, a Convener of #FixTheCountry pressure group had later explained that his usage of “coup” was contextual and had also been conditioned upon the e-levy being passed.

He also announced that his group had succeeded in agreeing in principle with an international group of lawyers to challenge the e-levy policy in a “coup”.

However, the government still arrested him, charged him for treason felony, and caged him unconstitutionally beyond the stipulated 48 hours.

His lawyers have since pointed out that the young man, a constitutional lawyer, does not even have the capacity to carry out the alleged threat.

The Deputy Defense Minister thinks Ghanaians do not want a coup d’état “…I believe in all fairness, majority of Ghanaians do not want that to happen. We want our freedom. If we want to make a decision so far as changing government in this country is concerned, we will go to the ballot box and not to use the bullet,” he said.
