Mahama Calls On Akufo-Addo To Tackle Worsening Armed Robbery

The office of former President John Mahama has called on President Akufo-Addo and his government to arrest the worsening security situation in the country, including violent robberies on the highways.

The call was made in reaction to the killing of an international journalist, Syed Taaley Ahmed, by robbers on the Tamale-Buipe highway.

“During President Mahama’s recent tour of the five regions in the north of the country to thank the people for their support in the 2020 elections, he met with chiefs, stakeholders, opinion leaders and religious leaders who mentioned insecurity on the highways as one of the key matters of concern,” ex-President Mahama stated.

Ironically, the slain journalist, working with a crew from the London-based Muslim TV (MTA International), was in the country to work on a documentary assessing Ghana’s peace and security, when he met his untimely death.

The Police have since rounded up four suspects and killed two after an exchange of fire in a confrontation in the area.

The statement from former President Mahama expressed concern that just days after the incident, armed robbers struck again in broad daylight on the Bolgatanga-Walewale highway where motorists were robbed of their valuables.

The statement expressed confidence in the Ghana Police, nonetheless, saying what the Police need are better logistical support from the government.

“We note also that despite the low morale of many of our police personnel due to the lack of adequate crime-fighting logistics, the Ghana Police Service remains one of the best in Africa and when given all the support, can secure our highways and ensure security for all our people,” the statement read.
