President Akufo Addo dealt a severe blow to the hopes of the victims affected by the
Akosombo Dam spillage in the Volta Region, reminding them of their supposed partisan
affiliation with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
I came here because Ghanaians are facing difficulties and suffering, and it is my
responsibility to try and help. If it is merely about counting who votes for me and who
doesn’t, then I shouldn’t be here, because you don't vote for me, stated the President. This
statement has ignited public discourse, questioning the President's choice of such a well-
known occasion to address distressed victims.
On Monday, President Akufo Addo visited Mepe, the epicentre of the devastating effects of
the Akosombo Dam floods. However, the effort has backfired, intensifying the prevailing
anguish and turmoil among the victims.
The destructive spillage flattened several infrastructures and properties worth millions of
Ghana cedis. But when President Akufo Addo had the opportunity to provide solace, he
shocked the flood victims by making the entire incident partisan.
A statement issued by the Regional Secretary of the opposition National Democratic
Congress (NDC) condemned President Akufo Addo, deeming his address as traumatic for the
people, describing it as empty and lacking direction. Many flood victims had hoped for
reassurance, aid, and a clear plan to help them rebuild their lives. Instead, the speech seemed
out of touch with the magnitude of their suffering and the urgent need for action," the
statement pointed out.
According to him, the President displayed a lack of empathy towards the emotional strain
being endured by the victims. He also noted that Nana Akufo Addos failure to address
immediate concerns, including finding tangible solutions for housing, healthcare, and
essential services for numerous flood victims, has left gaps in the Presidents address.
In the aftermath of this disappointing speech, local leaders, humanitarian organisations, and
concerned citizens have expressed their consternation about the Presidents faux pas. The
Volta Region is the political stronghold of the opposition NDC. Before the flood, the Akufo
Addo-led NPP government had been accused of neglecting the region due to their political
affiliation.
The NDC implores the government to take immediate steps to address the crises that have
befallen the people and their communities and to refrain from politicising the situation. As
the humanitarian crisis deepens with each passing day, it is crucial for the government to take
practical steps to alleviate the torment endured by the victims of this disaster.
