National Security Handling Aisha Huang’s Case

The case of notorious Chinese illegal miner, Aisha Huang, is being handled by National Security.

This is according to the Director of public relations of the Ghana Immigration Service, GIS, Supt Amoako-Atta.

Aisha Huang, aka Galamsey Queen, is facing two charges together with three conspirators, Johng Li Hua, Huang Jei and Huaid Hai Hun: mining without licence and engaging in the sale and purchase of minerals without a valid licence.

These charges were preferred after she was arrested by the authorities in Ahodwo for dealing in illegal mining after she sneaked back into the country following a 2018 deportation.

Supt Amoako Atta explained in an interview with Accra-based TV3 that the sensitivity of the matter was the reason it had been taken over by National Security despite her interception by Immigration officers.

This is the second time the Akufo-Addo government is using so called sensitivity as an excuse in the matter of the notorious Chinbese woman who has been nicknamed ‘Galamsey Queen’ for her notorious illeghal mining activities in Ghana.

In 2019, then Senior Minister, Yaw Osafo Maafo, had similarly explained away the government’s refusal to prosecute Huang for galamsey with the excuse that her case was diplomatically sensitive.

This time round, Supt. Amoako Atta said Huang could be prosecuted for illegal entry ingto the country. “That is an illegal entry and currently as we speak, National Security is handling the issue because of how sensitive it is and she was taken to court and a remand taken against her.

He also denied that Huang had been in the country for more than three months as reported by some media outlets. “The information I have from our officers is not the three months that you are talking about.

“By mid-August and second September, she was intercepted by our officers… when it comes to the borders, we have not hidden the fact that our borders are porous especially in the subregion and it is not peculiar to the West Africa subregion alone but across the world,” he added.

On Monday, September 5, 2022, the Accra Circuit Court 9 presided by Samuel Bright Acquah, remanded Aisha Huang, into custody.
