Galloping Inflation Hikes School Canteen Samosa From 50 pesewas To Ghc2

Jeremiah Komla Mawunyo Jnr., the 11-year-old of the St. Martin de Porres School who won the 4th Edition of JSA Phenomenal Abrantie Award 2021, has told of how galloping inflation in Ghana has shot up the price of a popular snack in his school’s canteen by some 300%.

He wants the government to do something about it.

In an interview on Accra-based Joy Prime, the intelligent Mawunyo Jnr. Said he was aware of inflation because the price of samosa in his school’s canteen which used to sell for 50 pesewas is now going for a whopping Ghc2.

“Currently I know that Ghana’s Economy is not doing well or is not thriving because drastically, prices of goods and services in the country have increased,” he said, adding, “because at school, at my canteen, a little piece of samosa that used to go for 50 pesewas has now shot up to Ghc2,” the teenager lamented.

The inflation situation in Ghana is practically a scandal, and amidst the disaster, the government has been claiming that the level of inflation is 23.6%, but experts disagree.

Prof. Steve Hanke of the Johns Hopkins University in the US recently revealed his measurement of inflation in Ghana showed it was 45.63%.

Master Mawunyo Jr. also grasped the opportunity when he was asked to advise the government.

He said: “So my advice to the government is that they should be able to appoint competent people to state institutions, people who have skills relevant to the positions they are being given; people who have Ghana at heart…the President himself should make sure that the laws punish any corrupt practices in the country.”

The JSA Phenomenal Abrantie Award is an annual award received by outstanding boys at Junior Shapers Africa (JSA), who exhibit values, leadership skills and a passion to address one of the many challenges faced by children in Ghana.

Four boys have so far received this award. The previous recipient of this award is Nana Yaw Darkwah Oti Boating, a British-born Ghanaian resident in the UK, who contributed to JSA’s efforts of mentoring school boys at Jamestown-Accra through fundraising activities.

JSA’s Founding Director is Mrs. Ethel Adjorlolo Marfo.
