Akufo-Addo Moves On With Legless Prosecution Of Barker-Vormawor Over Cooked Up Coup

The self-inflicted paranoia of the Akufo-Addo government which makes it jump at the mention of the word “coup” continues as the Director of Public Prosecutions tells the court the state has evidence to present that #FixTheCountry Convener, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, really intended to overthrow the government.

In what has come to many as comic relief, the DPP, Yvonne Attakora Obuobisa, told the district court that the State has arrayed witnesses who will give evidence that Mr. Barker-Vormawor indeed intended to carry out a coup.

Interestingly, Madam Attakora Obuobisa tells the court all her witnesses are police officers under IGP George Akuffo-Dampare, who himself is so jumpy that he has recently escalated his paranoia to the British High Commissioner to Ghana, Harriet Thompson.

Incidentally, a sizeable portion of the Ghanaian society are quite familiar with the corrupt and dishonest nature of the Ghana Police Service (GPS) and as such, the so-called evidence is being viewed as nothing but another cooked-up attempt to silence another political dissident.

Ahead of whatever evidence that the state wants to provide, it would be recalled that Mr. Barker-Vormawor had been arrested at the Kotoka International Airport upon arriving in the country from the UK after he had posted on social media that he would stage a “coup” if the e-levy was approved.

His outburst was in reaction to an insulting birthday party that Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu had held for himself, where he cut a cake baked in the wording of “e-levy”

That cake was condemned by many because it mocked the public anger against e-levy.

Mr. Barker Vormawor had posted the empty threat on Facebook while in the UK and the jumpy Akufo-Addo government had declared him wanted for treason felony.

The poster subsequently, did not go into hiding but returned to Ghana and upon his return was arrested at Kotoka.

It has been over one month since the e-levy was approved and Barker-Vormawor has not staged a coup. Rather, he has been applying his energies to intensifying social activism against Akufo-Addo’s thieving, corrupt, murderous and incompetent government.

The same government had arrested a medical doctor and some security officers and accused them of gathering sophisticated weapons, including a kitchen knife, and buying sacks of dry pepper from Agbogbloshie in Accra supposedly to make pepper bombs for a coup to overthrow Akufo-Addo.

The kitchen knife and pepper bomb coup has left eggs on the face of the government.

Meanwhile, the constitution’s position on first-degree felony crimes such as coups is very clear – a supposed coupist must be caught in the act of preparing to stage the coup. Treason Felony is provided for in Section 182 of the Criminal and other Offences Act, 1960, Act 29.

Meanwhile, Mr. Barker-Vormawor is not backing down. The public-spirited activist is a member of a group of Ghanaian broadcasters and activists who have planned a two-day demonstration against the Akufo-Addo government from the 21st of June.

In the group, Mr. Mawuse Barker-Vormawor is serving as a lawyer. They intend to demonstrate against the many corrupt acts that the Akufo-Addo government is perpetrating against Ghanaians, including the theft of state lands, the thievish e-levy, and the Agyapa Mineral Royalties among others.
