The Ministry of National Security has asked various places of public gathering, especially churches and mosques around the country, to beef up security as a matter of precaution against possible terror attacks.
In a confidential letter addressed to the Office of the National Chief Imam, the Christian Council of Ghana, the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference and the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, the Ministry said its instruction is based on alert against the escalating wave of terrorism in the West African sub-region.
“In view of the growing threat to terrorism from the sub-region, and the expansionist drive of terrorist groups towards coastal West-African States, with a renewed modus operandi of targeting public gatherings, including places of worship, it is imperative that precautionary measures are taken by all stakeholders,” it said.
“These measures may include, but not limited to, the installation of CCTV cameras at designated places of worship, and engaging the services of approval private security guards, among others.”
The letter is signed by National Security Coordinator, Maj. Gen. Francis Adu-Amanfoh (Rtd).
It assured however that, “although the above directive has become necessary, the Ministry of National Security assures you of our continuous resolve to institute measures aimed at safeguarding the peace and security of the country.”
