9 Out Of 10 Ghanaians Have No First Aid Knowledge – Prof. Korsah

About 90% of Ghanaians do not know how to give first aid to a victim in an emergency says the former Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Prof. Agyeman Badu Akorsah.

Prof. Akosah who is also the Chairman of the Council of St. Johns Ambulance Ghana added that businesses have not seen the need to invest in training staff in first aid know-how.

“We have sent letters to the Governor of Bank Ghana asking him to make it obligatory for all financial institutions to train at least 1 employee in First Aid skills so these trained persons can lead their businesses during disasters. We have not heard from him through but we shall continue to cajole him to believe in our advice.” He said during the launch of the 85th anniversary of the St. John’s Ambulance in Accra.

Prof. Akosah says his conclusion is based on results gathered from a research he sent a team to conduct.

He lamented that there are many half-asleep drivers on the roads. “They trust alcohol, cola nut and energy drinks more than their natural selves”.

Dr. Martha Gansa Lutterodt, Technical Director, Ministry of Health, promised to make a strong case for Saint John’s Ambulance to be resourced this year though the Ministry’s budget has been cut by 30%.
