Fix The Country Or You Get Worst Disturbance Than Kumi Preko

Amb Alhaji Said Sinare, a National Vice-Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has warned the country may be on the brink if worsening economic hardships are not resolved as soon as possible.

In a post, Amb. Sinare who has been nicknamed the Zongo President shares fears from what he learnt from speaking to some youth of the country.

According to him, if things do not change early, the country could suffer “rifts” more dangerous than the ‘Kumi Preko’ demonstrations of the 90s.

“Today, I had the opportunity to speak with a group of Ghanaian youths, and I wish to persuade President Nana Addo and his clueless NPP government to take action to address the country’s shameful economic situation, which, if not fixed asap, could spark rifts across the country that would be far more dangerous than the #Kumi #preko protests,” Sinare noted.

The Kumi Preko protests had been led by the current President who was then in opposition and doing everything possible to become president.

The demonstration had been over the NDC government of Jerry Rawlings’ intent to introduce the Value Added Tax.

According to Akufo-Addo and the NPP at the time, VAT was an insensitive evil that the NDC was introducing. The demonstration led by a hot-headed Akufo-Addo turned violent leading to the death of five persons and the injury of many.

Interestingly, after the violent protest, the NPP would later increase VAT from 10% to 12% after coming into office in 2000.

Alhaji Said Sinare points out conditions in the country under Akufo-Addo are even worse than what sparked the Kumi Preko demonstration led by Charles Wreko Brobbey and Akufo-Addo.

“Our dear Ghana under President Nana Addo and his Bawumia-led NPP government is now confronted with a slew of problems and setbacks in the social, political, and economic spheres, resulting from a weakening economy, high unemployment, excessive borrowing, rising insecurity, the media brutality in most parts of the country, and corruption, all of which are threatening the progress made in our democratic development,” he said.
