Council Of State Meets Bagbin In A Peace Mission

The Council of State on Tuesday met with Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, in what has been reported as a mission to try to cure the spate of recent acrimonious and downright violent parliamentary engagements between the Majority and Minority sides of the Ghanaian legislature.

The meeting which took place at Parliament House was specifically at the instance of the Standing Committee of the Council of State and was led by Chairman of the Council, Nana Otuo Siriboe II.

It follows two earlier meetings that the Council had held with the Majority and the Minority sides of the House in an attempt to get the two sides to return to a harmonious working relationship in parliament.

Ghana’s 8th Parliament is a hung one with both the Majority and Minority sides having 137 MPs each, even though an independent MP for Fomena, is collaborating with the Majority side.

This situation had made it difficult for civil discourse in the Chamber, with episodes of parliamentary debates turning into violent fisticuffs and even a near-military takeover ordered by a minister in the Akufo Addo government.
