Former Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hannah Serwaah Tetteh, has been appointed as the United Nations’ Special Envoy to the Somali Peninsula.
Ms. Serwaa Tetteh by this new appointment succeeds Parfait Onanga-Anyanga of Gabon as the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa.
The Horn of Africa consists of the internationally recognized countries of Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia
Confirmation of the appointment is on the webpage of the United Nations Secretary-General, who has said that Ms. Tetteh “brings to this position decades of experience at the national, regional and international levels, including well-honed skills in building consensus among stakeholders, which will allow her to strengthen the partnership between the United Nations and countries in the Horn of Africa, as well as with the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), in the area of peace and security.”
Previously, the Ghanaian politician had since 2019 served as the Special Representative of the Secretary-General to the African Union and Head of the United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU).
Hannah Tetteh has also previously served as Director-General of the United Nations Office at Nairobi.
Before her appointment to the UN job, Madam Hannah Tetteh had served in a number of Ministerial capacities in both the erstwhile Mills and Mahama governments, including as Trade Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister.
