J4G Congratulates Minority For Rejecting Akufo-Addo’s Budget

Civil society group, Justice For Ghana (J4G) has congratulated the Minority in Parliament for rejecting the 2024 budget from the government saying the rejection serves in the interest of the Ghanaian people.

In a statement signed by its Convener, Bernard Mornah, the group said the rejection was an astute effort against a budget that serves the interest of the well-to-do, at the expense of the already suffering masses.

“Justice For Ghana wishes to commend Parliament for standing for the Ghanaian people and dutifully rejecting the 2022 Budget and Economic Policy of H.E Nana Addo Danquah AKuffo Addo, which sought to further worsen the plight of the suffering masses, with the imposition of more taxes. Parliament and in particular the minority worked in the interest of Mother Ghana and all Ghanaians at large,” the statement said.

Last week Friday, a one-sided Parliament voted to reject the 2022 budget after the Majority had staged a walkout.

The Minority side which had carried the vote had said that the budget proposal to levy mobile money transactions through an e-levy and the government’s deliberate neglect to make funding provision for the Keta Sea defense project was unacceptable.

“Your rejection of the 2022 Budget Statement is a testament that the Ghanaian people can no longer endure the terrible state of the Ghanaian economy…this Budget and Economic Policy was going to offer nothing than to enrich the ruling class and make the ordinary Ghanaian poorer,” the J4G said in their statement.

The group added that the implementation of the budget would have only worsened the hardships on the people, J4G called on the Minority to be vigilant to ensure that only a revised budget that is in the interest of the people is approved.
