Mahama supports tidal waves victims along the coast in Volta Region

The 2020 flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Mahama, has sent assistance to the victims of the recent tidal waves disaster in the Volta Region.

On Saturday he visited the victims bearing relief items including 2,000 bags of rice, 2,000 student mattresses, 1,000 cans of tomato paste, 1,000 gallons of cooking oil and other items to victims of the tidal waves in Keta, Anlo, and Ketu South in the Volta Region.

The former President who is expected to lead the NDC into the 2024 elections also inspected the extent of damage caused by the tidal waves at Anyanui and interacted with the victims.

In doing so, John Mahama had stepped in where the Akufo-Addo government has virtually abandoned its responsibility to help citizens who have suffered a natural disaster.

Interestingly while the government had turned a blind eye to the disaster in the Volta Region, the government through Vice President Bawumia had sent relief items to Sierra Leone which has also experienced natural disasters.

Mr. Mahama criticized the Akufo-Addo government for not even bothering to send representatives to empathize with the people.

“Even if you cannot provide them with anything, just a visit to show that you care about them is important,” Mr. Mahama said.

He also empathized with the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) for their inability to adequately respond to the needs of the victims because of resource constraints.

“NADMO doesn’t have the items, and I don’t blame them. It is the fault of the administration because they are not given the sufficient resources to be able to respond,” Mahama stated.

“The little that NADMO had, they have brought it, and that is why we have come to supplement whatever they have brought and to call on the government to show sympathy to the people here.”

Beneficiaries of the donations were full of praise for the former President for the kind gesture.

The former President was accompanied by a former Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Volta Regional Chairman of the NDC Henry Ametefe, Deputy Chairman of the Volta Region MPs Caucus, Kobby Woyome, the MP for Ketu South, and others.
