Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, has invited President Akufo-Addo’s rejected nominee for Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Juaben, Alex Sarfo Kantanka, over bribes that he allegedly paid to facilitate his confirmation by Assembly Members.
In a letter, the SP informs Mr. Kantanka that he has become a person of interest in a corruption investigation that the SP has opened into his rejection by the Assembly for the MCE job.
“The Office Of Special Prosecutor (OSP) has commenced investigations into allegations of corruption and corruption-related offences (especially corruption and intimidation in respect of a public election) particularly in relation to your Alex Sarfo Kantanka’s nomination and confirmation or otherwise as to the Municipal Chief Executive of Juaben Municipality in the Ashanti Region,” the SP wrote.
The letter dated 2nd November 2021, described Mr. Kantanka as “a person necessary for the investigations,” adding that, “You may be accompanied by counsel of your choice,”
The suspect is directed to be at the office of the Special Prosecutor in Accra at 2:30 pm on Tuesday, November 9, 2021, for an interview.
The invitation from the OSP comes after the Juaben Police had given Alex Sarfo Kantanka a self-recognizance bail over bribery.
After his nomination had been rejected by the Juaben Municipal Assembly, Sarfo Kantanka flew off the handle, calling down curses and insults on Assembly Members who took bribes from him but did not approve his nomination.
In a video, secretly recorded by an unknown person, an angry Sarfo Kantanak is seen demanding a refund of the bribes he paid to some of the Assembly Members vowing to recover amounts, including Ghc1000 that he doled out to bribe voters.
The videos have since gone viral, adding to the mean streak of the Akufo-Addo government which is now widely viewed as one of the most corrupt in the history of Ghana.
