A young man (name withheld) controlling the technology and database of the #FixTheCountry Movement has been robbed and all his electronic gadgets containing over one terabyte of data of the burgeoning youth movement have been stolen.
His home was robbed around 3 am today, August 20, 2021, by men suspected to be agents of the state, Whatsup News has gathered.
According to one of the conveners of the group, Oliver Barker–Vormawor who revealed the curious robbery attack, the robbers appeared to be looking for some specific database of the group as they carted away all the computers and mobile telephones of the technology guru of the #FixTheCountry Movement.
The assailants also traced some of the computers to a friend of the victim, who had given one of his computers to the group’s technology wizkid for fixing. After carting away all the computers and mobile phones, the robbers headed for the house of the friend and robbed him clean of all technology devices.
Luckily, no casualty was recorded. But this is the second time in less than 2 months that the victim’s home has been broken into.
Narrating the ordeal, Mr. Baker-Vormawor said, “He [the robbery victiom] went to bed around 10 pm. His dad woke him up at 3 am as he was preparing for work. The Dad discovered the window through which his room was broken into. Of the three computers stolen; one was given to him by his close Friend for repairs. That friend was supposed to pick it up this morning. So I drove him to the Friend’s house to break the news to him. We get there to find out that his friend’s office was also robbed last night: GHC 16,000.”
The Ghana Police Service has reportedly visited the robbery scene and had found hats and masks used by the robbers and are allegedly mounting an investigation.
“Apart from the money, devices and television stolen, we have assessed the data damage to #FixTheCountry and the Kid. More than 1 terabyte of data was lost. 90 Gig of data backed up. Luckily others have copies of all the August 4th Protest. That’s 220 gigs. The devices and storage are all encrypted. So unless they run some military-level decryption services, the devices are useless in their hands. But unrecoverable data is gone,” said Barker-Vormawor
The #FixTheCountry group is a spontaneous movement formed online by thousands of Ghanaian youth who are disgruntled with the corruption and rotten political status quo in Ghana.
The movement which started simply as a hashtag on Twitter around May this year has quickly grown into one of the most powerful pressure groups in Ghana, sending fears of a possible youth revolution through the corridors of the political elite in Ghana.
The group recently shocked the entire country on August 4, 2021, by organizing the biggest non-political street protest in Ghana’s recent history.
The protest had been a long-drawn battle between the group and the Ghana Police Service which had been given “order from above” to thwart the demonstration with a perpetual injunction.
However, after two major court cases at the Supreme Court and the High Court and after flooring the Police and the Attorney General in both courts, the state had no option other than to allow the increasingly restless youth to mount their demonstrations which officially revealed the ultimate demand of the group.
The group wants a complete overhaul of Ghana’s 1992 constitution that still governs the country. They claim, the constitution has outlived its usefulness as it continues to be impotent against the creating of a dangerous political elite class that has raped the country’s resources without any repercussion.
